Design Inspiration:
The Scottish whisky industry's sustainability strategy, together with the production processes it employs, form the basis of the integrated, eco-friendly design concepts embodied in this modern version of a locking Tantalus.
The central components (wooden base and supports, secure frame and combination lock) have been made from renewable materials and recyclable metals, The locking mechansim incorporates re-purposed gemstones.
The hand-crafted bee, spider, butterfly and ladybird reinforce the nature inspired theme running through the design concept, which underppins the whisky industry's close association with the environment and natural processes.
Design Features:
A central glass decanter, secured within a lightweight titanium frame, is released using programmable 18ct gold-plated rings, inset with gemstones. Once released the cage can be stored vertically using the separate stand.
The frame itself is shaped to imitate the pot stills used in the whisky process and is adorned with insects (bee, spider, butterfly and ladybird) that play a vital role in the overall eco-process.
The central tantalus and matching fine silver-plated glasses are mounted on a wooden base, designed to continue the sustainability theme. Two different types of wood were used: yellow oak reflects the fields of barley, through which runs a black ebony band to emulate the river-sourced water and peat used in the process.
The complete assembly is mounted on yellow gold-plated adjustable feet.
Touch sensitive lighting is employed throughout to enhance the appearance. It can be changed with the handset according to the mood or occasion.
